18 May 2016

The upgrading of the line from Plovdiv to the Greek and Turkish borders began more than 10 years ago and is now finally being completed. This was announced by the Minister of Transport, Information Technology and Communications Ivaylo Moskovski during the official opening of the railway sections Dimitrovgrad-Simeonovgrad, Lubimets-Greek Border and Lyubimets Railway Station which are part of the Project "Plovdiv-Svilengrad Railway Electrification & Upgrading of Corridors IV and IX, Phase 2: Parvomay-Svilengrad Section." The ceremony was attended by the Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, the Deputy Ministers of Transport, Information Technology and Communications Anton Ginev and Valeri Borisov, representatives of the local and central government, etc.

According to Minister Moskovski, in a few months the section from Plovdiv to Septemvri Town will also be completed and there will remain to be implemented the section to Sofia and to our border with Serbia. "Without political stability and the support of all institutions, including municipalities and mayors, we can be sure that this cannot be realized," said Minister Moskovski. He added that all efforts will be made so that besides the new infrastructure in a few years there are new trains to run on it. The Minister pointed out that there is design readiness also for the railway projects in Northern Bulgaria. "At the stage of Preliminary Designs we are ready for the sections Mezdra-Gorna Oryahovitsa, Ruse-Varna, Vidin-Sofia".

"For the new programming period, our goal is the completion of the started railway lines," said Moscovski. "In a few years from Serbia to Turkey, from Greece and the Port of Burgas freights will travel on completely renovated tracks, allowing quick and safe transport," he said.

"Lyubimets Railway Station was in a miserable condition when I first came here. Several years of work and I think that all of you can see the difference," said the Prime Minister at the opening. He also added that the towns in the region – Lyubimets, Svilengrad, Harmanli and Dimitrovgrad are now minutes away from each other, both by motorway and by train.

The Mayor of Lyubimets Anastas Anastasov thanked the team of Minister Moskovski and said this has been the first renovation of the railway station for 143 years.

The Prime Minister Boyko Borisov and the Minister Ivaylo Moskovski traveled along the fully upgraded line from Lyubimets to Svilengrad. The locomotive, which was personally driven by the Prime Minister, reached a speed of 205 km/h.

The Project "Plovdiv-Svilengrad Railway Electrification & Upgrading of Corridors IV and IX, Phase 2: Parvomay-Svilengrad Section" is for a total amount of 424 million BGN and is financed by the Operational Programme "Transport" 2007 – 2013. With the implementation of this project the speed of the railway has increased to 160 km/h for passenger trains, to 200 km/h for tilting trains and to 120 km/h for freight trains. The project upgraded all the railway stations falling within its scope – Dimitrovgrad, Simeonovgrad, Nova Nadezhda, Harmanli, Lyubimets, Svilengrad. An overhead contact network, traction substations, signaling systems, telecommunications and radio control are being implemented.
